Abundance in pratice
Last July, I mentioned an article I’d read about ecological abundance. “For each season, there should be one plant that dominates and is ‘charismatically everywhere.’ These plants should be chosen because they’re beautiful, and also because of their roles as floral resources or host plants.”
To explore this idea, I selected a few plants that I hoped might deliver abundance - aquilegia, red campions, and foxgloves - and planted bulbs (aquilegia), seeds (campion), or plugs (foxgloves) en mass. Our terrace turned out to be too hot and sunny for the aquilegia and foxgloves, but the campions have gone crazy. They’re dazzling and popular with the bees.
I’ll see what plants do well this year, so that we have abundance for each season.
