Reorganization!
When we started the terrace garden, I bought a bunch of plants and threw them in pots! We now have 123 plant species, and it’s time to be more sophisticated. In particular we’re:
Placing containers into distinct zones - woodland, wetland, grassland, and coastal. We want the zones to look visibly different: the coastal plants are low-lying and in terracotta pots with pebbles on top; grassland plants have a lot of grass (!) and are similar in height to look like a continuous meadow; the wetland zone is home to the taller plants such as purple loosestrife, hemp agrimony, and goldenrod,; and the woodland is multi-storied with trees, shrubs, ferns and mosses.
Splitting plants that have different moisture needs. I had fun last year sprinkling red campion, poppy and other seeds across the pots. It created a wonderful flower display in the summer, but we ended up with plants with different moisture needs in the same pot, and the campion also got too aggressive.
Selecting the right soil mix for each plant. e.g. do they need acidic or alkaline soils, grit or not, nutrient rich or poor soil.
Many of our plants suffered from the brutal summer, now they’ll get some individual care, and that’ll be god for the wildlife too. We also have a new Charles Bound pot to show off:
