Caring for the plants

Our crab apple (Malus x Zumi ‘Golden Hornet’) has had a beating from the wind and heat.

It was a brutal June for plants - day after day of winds, combined with a heat wave. To make matters worse, we were often away on trips during the worst heat.

Around two-thirds of the pots we have are from the company, Elho. The pots are colorful and made from recycled plastic; and significantly, many of them have built in drainage systems i.e. areas below the pots where water can stand. It’s hard to know if this is a good thing, I’m nervous that the plants aren’t getting enough water and I’m also nervous that they’re getting too much.

Most of the pots have trays, or built in drainage systems.
